PEPPA Framework Toolkits
The PEPPA and PEPPA Plus toolkits were developed and evaluated as part of a collaborative research study involving Cancer Care Ontario, McMaster University, Laurentian University and regional cancer centres in Sudbury and Hamilton, Ontario.
The toolkits provide a systematic guide for developing and evaluating innovative healthcare services that maximize the use of advanced nursing and other health provider roles. The toolkits are based on the PEPPA Framework (participatory, evidence-informed, patient-centred process for APN role development, implementation and evaluation).
The PEPPA and PEPPA Plus toolkits include a variety of resources, tools and activities to guide healthcare teams through the PEPPA Framework. Although the design focuses on APN roles, the same framework can be applied to various nursing roles and healthcare providers in other disciplines.
Use of the PEPPA Framework and these toolkits promotes:
- Appropriate use of health care resources based on patient need
- Interdisciplinary team work
- Improved coordination and continuity of care
- Stakeholder acceptance and satisfaction with advanced practice nursing
- Long-term APN role sustainability
Potential toolkit users may include:
- Government policy makers
- Health care planners
- Health care administrators and managers
- Nursing leaders
- Advanced practice nurses
- Health care providers
- APN educators
- Health researchers

PEPPA Framework
The PEPPA Framework defines 9 key steps for effectively assessing the need for an advance practice nurse and for developing and implementing this role within the practice setting. A core component of this step-by-step approach is the collective involvement of key stakeholders, including patients, in the planning and evaluation process.
