Building evidence to optimize the contribution of advanced practice nurses (APN) in primary health care (PHC) in Chile in the context of the health system reform

Goal: To engage key stakeholders and policy makers to identify and prioritize policy issues that would guide an analysis of the nursing labor market and the potential use of advanced practice nurses for the delivery of primary health care services within the Chilean health system. To define the policies questions, objectives, timelines and resources available for the labor market analysis.

Methods:
- Discussion forum of 30 stakeholders from the public and private primary health care sector (e.g., nurses, physicians, community and social service agencies, educators, regulators, public/consumers of health services) to identify and prioritize policy questions to guide a future analysis of the nurses’ labor market

Status:
- Discussion forum completed – 34 participants including Ministry of Health officials, municipal officials, PHC center directors/managers, patient associations, health professional associations and university professors of nursing and medicine
- Participants’ feedback on the results completed
- Analysis of main findings completed
- Report drafting in progress
- Feedback from participants on the report pending

Will produce a final report outlining key health policy issues and labor market factors to provide evidence for enhancing the role of nursing/APN in PHC in Chile
